I don’t know about you, but as we rein in each new year, I feel like I come to a bit of a crossroads with my style. While some people take inspiration from the new year to adopt better habits, or maybe try a new hobby, I wonder how fashion will evolve in the coming months. This year in particular, I have noticed some patterns in how people are dressing that signal some exciting changes for this calendar year.
To begin, I believe that we will see a rapid increase in colourful and patterned tights, in particular in the winter months as we transition into spring. We began to see this in the fall as we transitioned into winter, but I feel that extravagantly patterned tights in vibrant colours will expand in variety and accessibility for the general public, rather than just being seen in haute couture runway shows.
Next, bold statement glasses will be big this year – nearing the end of 2023, we saw a revival of the thin bayonetta glasses that elicit haunting memories for many of us, but for 2024 I think that these will quickly be swapped out for thicker frames that can act as a statement piece to a simpler outfit. On the topic of bold statements, we can also expect to see a major increase in editorial-style eye makeup – that is, vibrant eyeshadows, namely blue, bold lips, namely red, and just much more experimentation with how makeup can change the shape of someone’s face.
Last year we saw a couple of major trends for hair – the French bob, and, of course, cherry red hair. These were great, but this year I think we will see many people opt for a lighter caramel or auburn brown colour, and even shorter chops, like a pixie cut. Skinny jeans are alarming for many of us, and while I believe these are gone for good (thankfully), I do think that as corporate-casual fashion gains steam, straight-leg jeans or cigarette pants will come with it for a slightly more elevated look.
On the topic of pants, I believe that people will begin opting for mid-rise silhouettes over low-rise ones as Y2K fashion dies out because fewer people will want their midriffs exposed if it is not “in style,” but will still seek the comfortability that is often lacking in high-rise options.
Finally, we witnessed an absolute explosion of the Adidas Samba in 2023 due to its versatility and fitting in with the “Blokecore” aesthetic. This year, I see an expansion in the consumption of retro-style sneakers. Namely, this year I see people’s tastes reaching into other styles and brands, like the Adidas Spezial or Country, the Nike Cortez, and the Puma Palermo.
I think that, overall, 2024 will be a very expansive year for fashion, in which everyday people can have access to a wider variety of clothing and accessories to suit their own style, and I personally cannot wait.
