Most fashion-obsessed are equally obsessed with defining their own style. So when I came across a TikTok by @myinternetcousin, who explained her style in themes, I was intrigued. She broke down her motive for dressing by using existing terms found in fashion and pop culture (i.e. art heaux, uncle daddy, etc.). By using these themes, her approach to her style was so personal and intimate that it felt like I was reading her zodiac. I wanted to explore, if we all created an astrological chart for our personal styles?
What are the Big Three?
In astrology, the Big Three are the most influential placements in your chart. The placement of your sun, moon, and rising all make up your Big Three. With these three placements you’re able to get a well-rounded image of who you are. Your sun sign represents who you are overall, your moon sign represents who you are internally, and the rising represents how everyone else views you.
Whether you’re clueless about astrology or not, you can still give your style a Big Three! It’s all about looking internally and finding your motives for why you dress the way you do. When trying to find your style’s Big Three, ditch the astrology signs and look to themes from pop culture and fashion to describe your placements (scroll to the bottom for a comprehensive list of style placements).
Building your Big Three
Your style’s sun sign would be your style’s overarching aesthetic. If you had to generalize your style to one word , that would be your sun sign. For example, Kendall Jenner’s sun would be “model-off duty”. The sun is meant to be a broader term that is easily applicable to your style.
Your style’s moon would be the underlying theme. What’s a clothing item or accessory that you can’t seem to stray away from… even if it doesn’t match your main aesthetic? Your moon sign is what makes your style distinct from someone else who might share the same sun. Even if your style’s sun is grunge, you might not be able to leave the house without something pink on. In that case, your style’s moon could be described as ‘pinkalicious’.
Finally, your style’s rising is how your style is perceived by someone walking down the street on first impression. Not to be confused with the sun, which is an overarching theme, your rising is your style at a glance. To find out my own rising sign it was super helpful to ask the people around me for an objective opinion.
If you’re still confused: your style’s sun sign could also be seen as your “style goals”, while your moon is your style’s guilty pleasure, and your rising is your style reality
