The Moon Boot: A look that only some can understand. Inspired by Neil Armonstrong’s 1969 moon landing, created in the same year, hence the name and design, the Moon Boot is a winter staple for many. Entrepreneur Giancarlo Zanatta and the manufacturing company Tecnica Group, known for creating work boots, collaborated to create the cult shoe Moon Boots. Soon, it was worn by everyone and in ski resorts everywhere throughout Europe and America, worn by aristocrats, royalty, and even on the runway.
In the 70s, the moon boots became the must-have shoe to don at après-ski in the Alps, first appearing on the Chanel Runway in 1994, worn by Claudia Schiffer, where Karl Lagerfeld took his own spin on the famous shoe caused other brands to want to collaborate with the company such as Chloé, Moncler, Fendi, and others.
Fast forward to today; they are seen on our favorite celebrities like Dua Lipa and Hailey Beber, sprawling all across the pages of magazines. What makes Moon Boots so unique is its particular nylon fabric, which is very light, cannot get wet, and is known for keeping your feet insanely warm walking through the snow. The bright colors and patterns attracted onlookers and were soon loved by celebrities like Paul McCartney. Various designers have added their twist to the boot, from the length, texture, and even color.
Along with the mid-thigh boot, today, the most common one is the ankle moon boot, giving a spin on Y2k Fashion, having resurfaced in the early 2000s worn by Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian, and Victoria Beckham.
Seeing the iconic boots appear after so long on everyone’s favorite stars reminded the people of the iconic boot again, bringing it back to everyone’s closets.
Now, it’s not only a bright color, but in collaborating with other brands, they now have bright patterns, fringe, pom poms, anything. The Moon Boots have been taken to another level since its creation in the late 1960s.
TikTok also made the Moon Boots re-appear earlier this year and soon became the “it” shoe to have in your closet at the height of the year 2k fashion comeback. As of 2020, the brand has sold around 45 million shoes around the world. The shoe was deemed so revolutionary that in 2000, artists from the Louvre Museum in Paris called the famous shoe to be a notable design of a boot that changed the 20th century.
Given that the early to late 2000s fashion is still hot today, it makes sense that moon boots will continue to appear on people’s feet, especially now that winter is coming. Influencers all over our page every year wear them, so what makes this year any different? I myself have bought a red pair to brave the Montreal winter and have already seen some others on campus with their space-like shoes. It goes to say that in 54 years, these shoes have been in style and have been loved by many around the world, I don’t think they’re going out of style anytime soon.
