ALYSSA CHALMER

Born in Halifax, Eva lived in Ottawa for most of her life. However, it was when she moved to Montreal that her clothing brand was initially formed. She studied painting at Concordia, but created Bonelessgirl after her time at school. In an interview she remarked,
“Bonelessgirl was just an experiment at first. I wasn’t inspired by painting and found I was stuck on a track that wasn’t satisfying me anymore.”
It was only when one of her friends asked her to make a wearable piece of art for an auction that Bonelessgirl sewed its seeds. While altering a long trench coat for the occasion, Eva realized that fashion and sewing would be more fulfilling than a career in painting. From that moment on, she started sewing more, giving her the push to establish Bonelessgirl.
Eva remembers, “The project for the art auction started everything. I was afraid to change my practice from painting, so it was necessary to have that push.”
The name Bonelessgirl was generated by a friend who was inspired by the online video game. Eva commented, “You know, that mini clip game with the girl in a bikini who falls through bubbles.”
Eva’s most recent collection was influenced by the back-to-school season in September. She wanted to emphasize comfort and flexibility while simultaneously feeling pretty and flattering. She drew inspiration from the big multicolor parachutes used in elementary school PE classes— the ones everyone would grab the edges of and sit under. Illustrating a desire for nostalgia, Eva’s collection represents back-to-school in all its gym class glory. It brings a sense of creativity and innovation to what could otherwise be considered as an ordinary back-to-school collection.
The parachute aspects are manifested in the collection’s skirts. Eva recalled that she wanted to use repurposed material.
“The small sections of the skirt make it so that I can easily trace the patterns on a top using the same fabric.”
She transforms repurposed fabrics into playful worlds of fun and wistfulness. The use of flowy material in the skirts and leg warmers, paired with more fitted pieces like tights, commits to Eva’s preference for a flattering silhouette.
