Even if you don’t know what exactly the Met Gala is, its evocation probably rings a bell. Perhaps you’ve read headlines about it, or maybe you’ve overheard heated best-to-worst-dressed debates. Known as “Fashion’s biggest night out”, the annual event is more than a congregation of celebrities adorned in luxury brands. It is, in fact, a fundraising gala made up of a red carpet, an exhibition visit, and a formal dinner, whose proceeds contribute to funding the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s (MoMA) conservation. Planned by Anna Wintour, US Vogue’s editor-in-chief and one of today’s most powerful figures in fashion, the event will celebrate its 29th edition on May 6th, 2024.
As usual, the Met Gala will take place at MoMA itself, located in the heart of New York City’s Midtown Manhattan. Approximately 700 global personalities—namely, singers, actors, musicians and athletes—will walk MoMA’s famous red-carpeted steps sporting luxurious and meticulously-curated outfits.
Over the years, guests have attended the Met Gala sporting extravagant and other-worldy looks. For instance, we can recall Jared Leto, who, in 2019, accessorized his outfit with a model of his own head in accordance with that years’ theme—camp. The Kardashians’ looks have also made the books—notably last year’s infamous controversy surrounding Kim Kardashian’s decision to wear Marilyn Monroe’s 1962 gown.
This year, attendees will be guided by the theme “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion”. It is inspired by The Costume Institute’s new exhibition, whose opening coincides with the Met Gala. We can expect outfits inspired by the Disney movie and accessories looking like they’d belong to royalty. Eye masks and pillows will definitely be of the sorts. Perhaps, some will even dare nightwear, and pass it off as suits or overalls. A more analytical understanding of the theme suggests the idea that fashion has been sleeping—which could point to the reintroduction of old or new trends in some attendees’ outfits. However, the dress code—which guides designers in celebrities’ outfit planning—has yet to be announced.
Likewise, information regarding performances has also not yet been disclosed. Usually, high-profile artists are invited to perform at the Met Gala—Lady Gaga in 2010, Rihanna in 2015, and even Madonna, who put on a show in 2018.
Regardless, the Met Gala will occur on the first Monday of May, and it is not to miss. Although you might not be able to secure one of the 50,000$ tickets, you can follow along with Vogue magazine who will livestream the red-carpet on social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter), and comment on the guests’ arrival, and outfits.
As of now, the hosts and guests for the 2024 Met Gala have not been revealed.
