Arc’teryx is by any means not a new label–founded in 1989 in North Vancouver, British Columbia, the brand has long been a favourite among outdoor enthusiasts.Over the past year, Arc’teryx has seen a surge in popularity across social media, sported by artists such as Drake and Frank Ocean, as well as, various fashion influencers, massively increasing the label’s popularity and their reach to a broader market .



Luxury or high fashion brands rarely derive their status from functionality, but that’s precisely what sets Arc’teryx apart from other outerwear lines. The brand’s authentic outdoor credentials are a plus to the new Arc’teryx consumer who is attracted to the garments predominantly for style rather than its true sporty function. The desire to style items inspired by diverse lifestyles has become a rising trend in fashion. This shift has turned “gorpcore” —a movement where sportswear and outerwear is worn as streetwear—into a multi-million dollar industry. 

Arc’teryx has never officially recognised their new style affiliation and market expansion, a wise business move considering the fleeting nature of trend cycles. The brand’s social media pages continue to feature images of their consistent target audience wearing their clothes in action, including professional rock climbers, skiers, campers, and hikers. The fact that Arc’teryx remains true to its original focus, allows  them to maintain their  brand authenticity and durability in an industry constantly cycling through trends. This commitment to the  core identity has helped Arc’teryx build a lasting reputation, unlike other brands that chase after short-lived fads. 



Arc’teryx’s commitment to sport is a direction which emphasizes a broader tension in the fashion industry: authenticity versus adaptability. It is unlikely that the label will be revolutionised in mainstream fashion over the long term. Nevertheless, it will continue to be a historic and iconic brand for the audience it was originally designed for, a true accomplishment that exemplifies the qualities of the best companies of our time.
