The 5 Best and Worst Red Carpet Looks

Let awards season begin! Most of the 2024 Golden Globes were a disaster, to say the least. However, we did get a few great clips of Ryan Gosling’s disapproving facial expressions and some killer fashion moments. I will admit I checked out a few minutes after Jo Koy’s trainwreck opening monologue, but it’s all about the fashion anyway… right? From Hunter Schaffer’s ethereal gown to Billie Eilish’s ill-fated attempt at red carpet corporate-core, there is a lot to unpack.
5 Best:
Margot Robbie in Armani, 1977 Superstar Barbie Dress: 9/10
I saw a lot of mixed reviews on this dress but I absolutely LOVE the look. I normally wouldn’t be so sure of the hot pink and sequins, but since she is Barbie, I am a fan. This may be one of my favourite Barbie-inspired dresses that Margot has worn. The fact that it emulates old Hollywood glamour is also perfect for the Golden Globes. She looked absolutely stunning. No complaints.
Aya Edebiri in custom Prada: 10/10
I cannot get over how stunning Ayo looks in this shade of red. It’s hard to go wrong with a monochromatic look and red is certainly going to be one of the leading fashion trends for 2024. I think it’s simple but the cape/train adds the perfect amount of flair. May I also add that her bob is INCREDIBLE.
Hunter Schafer in Prada: 8/10
Honestly, I wasn’t sure of how I felt about this dress, but the more I look at it, the more I think Hunter absolutely killed it. I love how there is so much movement and texture going on. It’s powerful, feminine, and ethereal all at the same time. It matches her personality and aura really well. However, the look would have been even better with some light accessorizing. Some dainty silver jewellery would have accentuated the texture and shine of the fabric. Also, I think that the neckline is too high and washes her out a bit; it would’ve been really pretty off the shoulder.
Greta Lee in Loewe: 9/10
She looks SO elegant. She killed the pose. Greta’s confidence makes the dress that much more powerful. Greta and this dress absolutely belong on the Golden Globes red carpet. I think she carries this dress so well, the shape is so goddess-like. Honestly, I’m a sucker for cream silk gowns. I think they are so classy. My only complaint is that it looks like there is a pillowcase tied to the back. I feel like the train could have been a bit longer but otherwise, the dress is gorgeous.
Gillian Anderson in Gabriela Hearst: 10/10
She. looks. Incredible. This look quite literally made my jaw DROP. The jewellery, the floor-grazing gown, the statement burgundy purse — it’s the epitome of Hollywood glamour. Also, if you look closely, you can see that the embroidery on the gown is a cheeky nod to “Sex Education” (look it up!). I truly cannot overstate how much I adore everything about it. Dare I say, this one is my ultimate favourite.
5 Worst:
Helen Mirren in Dolce & Gabbana: 3/10
In my opinion, this dress really does not do her beauty justice whatsoever. It’s a bit too Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother and I dislike the shape of the cape and the puffed sleeves. Overall, it doesn’t look like it fits very well and belongs at Disneyland.
Amanda Seigfred in Giorgio Armani: 4/10
This dress would have been way better with a different choice of bow. All I could think of when I saw the black and purple sequin bow was: tacky Christmas decorations. I appreciate the fact that she tried to lean into the trend of incorporating bows on red carpet looks, but it just did not hit the nail on the head. I think that a more neutral colour would have been a lot classier and elegant.
Riley Keough in Chanel: 5/10
This look isn’t necessarily terrible, but it’s definitely not good – I was expecting a lot more from Riley. Something about this dress just looks unfinished to me. I’m not a huge fan of bridal-esque designs on the red carpet and the combination of the full lace with the train is definitely in bride territory. I think that the mesh overlay looks awkward and it all just feels a bit random.
Billie Eilish in Chaviara: 2/10
I appreciate the nod to corporate wear and that Billie is staying true to her style, but nothing about this outfit was cohesive to me. The beige skirt and the pink socks go so terribly with the rest of the look and I wish that the blazer had a bit more structure. It just looks so messy and she looks like she is drowning in it. This is a big no for me!
Karen Gillan in Iris Van Herpen: 3/10
This was a huge swing and an even bigger miss. The thought was there and I will give her points for creativity, but that’s about it. If you zoom in, you can see that the opaque layer under the dress simply does not look good. The design is scaly to the point that it’s a bit off-putting — like a Venus flytrap or something that belongs in a budget sci-fi film. Definitely not for the Golden Globes.
