Award show season is the fashion gift that keeps on giving, and this year’s Grammys were no exception. There were big hits, big misses, and in betweens. Here is a breakdown of some of the best and worst looks of the night.
Metallics and sequins had a big moment, as seen on Tyla and Coco Jones (pictured right). These looks set both of them apart, specifically through their jewellery. For instance, Coco Jones’s dainty body chain complemented her dress’ plunging neckline and balanced out her classy up-do.
Tyla took home the title of best-dressed, stunning in a custom Versace gown complete with a fun updo and a blingy belly button ring. The gown fell perfectly over her body and was well styled, as her shoes and jewellery complimented the dress without drawing attention away from it. The simple strappy heels and silver hang-down earrings perfectly tied everything together. Accessorised with none other than a Grammy itself, her look went above and beyond.
Ice Spice also stood out: channelling 2001 Britney Spears, she brought fun to the Grammys’ red carpet. Her full length denim Baby Phat set with fur lining, complete with a statement necklace, was one of the best of the night. Glamorous and playful, her floor-length skirt and metallic heels made an impression; they perfectly exhibited her bubbly personality, while showcasing her long nails and signature orange hair.
Miley Cyrus made headlines on Feb. 4th. Her looks were all impressive, but the one that stood out was an archival 2002 Bob Mackie dress that she adorned during her performance of her hit song, “Flowers.” The dress perfectly flattered her figure, and its movement added drama to her performance. Her Dolly Parton hair was the cherry on top to this look, increasing its overall glamour.
However, many looks fell short on the red carpet. Some stars’ outfits were slightly lacking, not quite reaching their full potential.
Olivia Rodrigo left her beaded Versace dress from Spring 1995 to fend for itself style-wise. Her simple hairstyle and minimal use of jewellery made the look rather bland. Certain style choices, such as her sapphire ring and red lip, did not fit well together and seemed haphazard. I would have loved to see her dress paired with a chic up-do, or perhaps statement earrings, to elevate her look further.
Although Sofia Richie undoubtedly looked amazing, when does quiet luxury become too quiet? As much as it hurts to say, her look verges on boring. The Grammys red carpet strikes me as a place to take risks and make a statement, which this fails to do.
There were also, as always, some truly terrible looks.
While I appreciate Ellie Goulding’s risk-taking here, her outfit’s execution fell short. There’s far too much going on in this Zuhair Murad dress for me to even process; mixed materials and endless layering are distracting to the eye, made even worse by the haphazard feathers sticking out of her arms.
Chrissy Teigen took the 3D flower trend a little too far with this Alexandre Vauthier dress, which is made even worse by her painfully high stilettos. The dress’s bright pink flowers border on tacky, and this is amplified by her chunky platform heels that, in all honesty, look brutal to wear. Her look’s lack of styling—specifically, with respect to jewellery—doesn’t help; it forces the dress and shoes to stand on their own.
Unpopular opinion: Doja Cat was one of the worst dressed. Her look was a hot mess; the dress’s sheer material did not mesh well with her tattoos, and the glasses’ chic vibe threw me off, as they didn’t fit with her look’s edgier.
Many stars also experimented with bold colours. While I appreciate this in theory, but their execution, in this case, was butchered by a few.
Musician Sheila E’s experimentation with loud patterns and bright colours made for a look which was difficult to look at (see left). It was overwhelming and not pleasing to the eye—which was worsened by her sparkly sneakers.
Missy Mazzoli (see right) wore a dress which loosely resembled something that would be worn to a middle school dance: a cheap-looking dress in a tacky copper colour. What’s more, her green hair streaks added to the look’s juvenile feel.
Overall, the Grammys’ red carpet definitely had well-executed looks, but in general, it was not terribly impressive. While many celebrities exhibited more basic outfits, others attempted risky red carpet fashion, and failed miserably.
