Angélique Gouws

The Oscars are a time for celebrities to hope to win the award they’ve always dreamed of, stylists and fashion brands to use such celebrities as their personal dolls, and everyone else to judge what they look like and whether they should or shouldn’t have won that certain award.

This year, however, was quite the disappointment in regards to outfits. I was expecting to see outrageous dresses and unique suits, similarly to what the Met Gala gave us, but was met with the opposite.

Many of the outfits were bland, or just didn’t suit whoever was wearing it. And of course, the majority of the men’s outfits were just painfully dull, and I feel bad for every single one who had to wear a typical tux.

Even with the majority of the outfits being bad, however, there were still some that completely devoured. The celebs that saved the red carpet and after party.

Here are my opinions of some of the best, and some of the worst, of the Oscars Red Carpet and Vanity Fair Party 2023 outfits.

five of the best:

Zuri Hall – Vanity Fair Party

10/10

Everything about this look eats. I love how she looks so chic, and how the dress is so simple yet isn’t at the same time. The ruffles are incredible and I adore the slit on the left leg. There is nothing off putting about her look and she absolutely devoured it.

Tems – Oscars Red Carpet

10/10

Literally speechless. The slicked back hair, the makeup, the nails, the pose, the dress. She looks so good. Everything about this outfit is so put together, and the white looks incredible on her. I love how unique the dress is, especially compared to the boringness of so many other Oscars outfits. The wedding-dress-veil vibe is so cool and I am obsessed with how it goes over her head. This is probably my favorite look of all of them.

Florence Pugh – Oscars Red Carpet

9/10

When does Florence Pugh not slay? Never. The dress looks amazing on her, and the parachute-look of the white adds such a risky uniqueness to the outfit. It’s like bedsheets in the best way possible. It could have been easy to go wrong with this look, but Florence rocked it. The only reason that I haven’t given her a 10/10 is because I am not obsessed with the black dress, and though I think it looks really good, I feel like something seems slightly off. Maybe if it was a little longer? Regardless, she looks beautiful.

Vera Wang – Vanity Fair Party

9/10

If Audrey Hepburn and Cruella Deville had a baby. I adore the split of black and white, and the fit of the dress on her. I think it looks really good with her skin tone, and I love the long natural hair paired with it. 9/10 was given rather than 10/10 as though the dress is beautiful, it is definitely not a risk.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I have no idea how Vera looks this good at 73. Like how. Whatever she is taking, please give it to me.

Rita Ora – Vanity Fair Party

9/10

I love this look. The corset top is super flattering, and I am dying for the shower-curtain look on her bottom half. It is such a unique tie of the corset and skirt part, and I think the designers killed it. Her hair also looks so good, and I love the silver jewlery. The only part I am not crazy for is the nude part at the waist, and I feel like it would have looked better if it matched her skin tone more. Regardless, Rita looks stunning.

As you can probably tell, I am a big fan of black and white looks. Neutral colours just look so fitting on everyone, and add a simple boldness that can completely change the look of an outfit.

five of the worst:

Julia Louis-Dreyfus – Oscars Red Carpet

2/10

The rating of 2 stands for two words – Old Navy. I feel like I have seen 1000 wine moms wear this in my British Columbia home-town, and all I can do is picture this dress with a cream-coloured wide-brimmed hat. I do appreciate the belt, and I think that is what saved this dress from being a 0/10. Julia herself looks very nice, but the dress is just so casual that I cannot rank it any higher. I’m sorry Julia but it looks like you are heading to church.

Sigourney Weaver – Oscars Red Carpet

2/10

She looks like an oscar. /gen. Like just compare her to the cut out behind her – almost identical. The cheetah-print is cool, but I don’t understand why the dress has to be so glisteny and I feel like the shininess ruins the design. Her dress is reminding me of her role in Holes because it reminds me of the dirt and sand. The fit of the dress is also awkward, and I don’t appreciate how it suddenly goes skinny above the knees and then wavy at the calves. Her hair, however, I love. It is so elegant, and honestly it’s her head that spared her those 2 points.

Jamie Lee Curtis – Oscars Red Carpet

3/10

I love Jamie Lee Curtis so much. Like so much. Literally bae. However, this look is just not it. I am never a fan of nude, and the fact that nude is the colour of the entire dress is just overwhelming. I am not a fan of the style of dress either, and I think it gives more mom-of-the-bride rather than fashion. I do like the gems though, and as usual Jamie looks beautiful.

Monica Lewinsky – Vanity Fair Party

3/10

I hate that I am rating it this low, because Monica herself is super pretty, but the dress is just so bad. I despise the black frill, and I think the white silk honestly looks cheap. I also just don’t think the dress suits her, and I believe that the designers could have put her in something else much more flattering. The cut off above the heels also looks awkward.

Tessa Thompson – Vanity Fair Party

5/10

A pass for creativity, but that’s it. I really like the idea behind the dress, and I am all for the whole dress-suit look, but I think the bat missed the ball with this one. The actual dress part starts at an awkward point on her torso, and the red bra is just so random. I have figured out what it is supposed to represent – the rose that is found in the breast pocket of a tuxedo – though I think this could have been incorporated in a form other than this strange looking top. The creativity of the outfit is definitely cool, and this look is much more interesting than the other pieces I gave a bad rating too. Now that I am really looking at it, I don’t hate it as much as I initially did, and I do like the gloves and the hair/makeup.

The 2023 Oscars Red Carpet and Vanity Fair Party is not comparable to other years in regards to outfits. I don’t know what happened, but it felt like creativity was very sparse.
