As another year comes to a close and a fresh one awaits, many of us may find ourselves reflecting. What should I continue doing? What do I hope to do better? Whether you believe setting New Year’s resolutions can (or cannot) make lasting meaningful change, I think the tradition of resolutions encourages us to at least try and envision the exciting growth that could unfold in the coming year. In that spirit, here are some fashion-related New Year’s resolutions I’ve set for myself for 2024, driven by the overarching goal of exuding effortless elegance.
1. Buy only timeless pieces
Watching Sex in the City or Friends, I’ve thought to myself: God, Carrie Bradshaw and Rachel Green are so… timeless! They are both examples of style icons that are owners of well-curated collections of beautiful timeless pieces. The key lies in the quality of basics, which serves as the foundation to any elevated outfit. This year, I hope to enhance my collection with the following essentials: heeled black boots, a little black dress, a well-fitted casual white t-shirt, and a medium-sized everyday bag.
2. Deep Closet Clean Out
We all do it. Hidden behind the layer of clothes we actually reach for, we hoard camp t-shirts from middle school, the cardigan stolen from our mom’s closet, and that one thrifted top we never quite made work. This is the year, I will part ways with these items. I need to honestly ask myself, will I wear this in 2024? There is someone out there who will appreciate it more, and there are new pieces I’ll truly treasure owning. Only after I go through my closet will I allow myself to add new pieces to my wardrobe. My goal is to conduct a deep clean in the next few weeks and attend the next Circle of Fashion Clothing Swap!
3. Thrifting Not To Shop
A good friend of mine recently told me she goes thrifting without the hope of finding something new but rather, solely for inspiration. Different from window shopping, she treats it as real-life Pinterest—actively studying the unique collections at thrift stores and emulating styles with clothes she already owns. What a lovely idea! This can spark not only creativity, but also potential DIY projects, transforming unworn clothes into one-of-a-kind items. Exploring thrift stores is a cost-free and enjoyable way to explore Montreal, while also enhancing and refining personal style.
4. Try New Hairstyles
After mastering the blowout, I’ve honestly forgotten to try something different. From half-up-half-down styles to braids or using new hair tools for curls, in 2024, I will wear my hair differently at least once every week. An extra thirty minutes can make a world of difference. Time put into hair can make up for a simple outfit. Hair is as integral to a look as it is to the styling of clothes itself.
5. No to Impulse Purchases
Last but not least, here is an easy goal I think everyone should actually consider sticking to. Wait 24 hours before buying something online. No one is safe from the temptations of spending way too much money on online shopping out of boredom, especially during enticing sales. Scanning Zara, Revolve, or boutique stores is a great pastime but it is certainly not a sustainable one—both financially and environmentally. It’s far too easy to give into microtrends or the adrenaline rush of placing an order and waiting for a package. Let’s make 2024 the year of intentional and responsible shopping!
After reading through my resolutions, I hope you’ve picked up an idea or two. Make a Pinterest mood board. Look for the consistencies in the chosen pictures. How do you want to elevate your style? Happy 2024 and cheers to a wonderful year <3
