Every year, the US Open attracts a diverse array of celebrities, who all gather to witness the top tennis players in action. Along with the A-list entourage comes a showcase of unforgettable fashion moments. Over the past year, the convergence of athletics and fashion has gained momentum, culminating at the recent 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. The presence of fashion among the athletes resulted in various innovative and stylish looks on and off the court. Though the US Open may not hold the same prestige as Wimbledon, it offers a distinctive platform for athletes and spectators to showcase bold fashion choices, particularly due to the absence of the all-white uniform restrictions imposed on players at the latter event. From sleek athletic wear to high-end designer collaborations, the US Open has essentially become a runway in its own right, where style meets sport in a celebration of individuality and performance.
Here is a recap of the 5 best looks, on and off the court.
1. Naomi Osaka
Though Naomi Osaka faced a second-round loss, she served some of the most memorable looks of the tournament, showcasing two bow-adorned outfits, designed by Nike in collaboration with Yoon Ahn. In her first match, Osaka wore an all-black ensemble featuring a tiered ruffled tennis skirt and an oversized bow at the back–a detail that certainly caught the attention of fashion enthusiasts, particularly as bows have recently surged in popularity. For her second match, she wore a lime green version of the outfit.
Osaka told The New York Times that her look was inspired by her Japanese heritage, viewing frills and bows as a staple of Japanese fashion culture. When asked about the “girlish design” of the outfit, she replied, “I wouldn’t automatically associate myself with being girlish on the court, but I tend to gravitate toward really beautiful and cute things”. Osaka added that “in New York, the tennis court is more like a stage”, and that she enjoyed using the tournament as an opportunity for self-expression.
2. Kendall Jenner
Kendall Jenner attended courtside sporting a chic take on traditional tennis whites with a modern twist, opting for a tweed skirt suit by Alaïa. Her outfit exuded timeless elegance, complemented by understated black accessories. The asymmetric collar brought a contemporary update to the classic design, which featured capped sleeves and structured shoulder pads.
3. Lucky Blue and Nara Smith
Influencers, Lucky Blue and Nara Smith embodied luxury and sophistication in Burberry. The couple showcased staples of the brand, with Nara donning their signature checkered print and riding boots, while Lucky wore a white collared shirt with black trousers and Burberry loafers. The Smiths’ outfits well-encapsulated the classy, all-American aesthetic seen repeatedly embraced throughout the tournament. Unlike most social media influencers, who are often the epitome of micro-trends and fast fashion, the Smiths have consistently showcased a refined and timeless personal style.
4. Grace Van Patten and Jackson White
The co-stars turned couple wore complimentary Ralph Lauren outfits, choosing casual yet polished Western-inspired looks. While many celebrities used the US Open as a chance to dress up, Van Patten and White exuded an effortlessly low-key vibe. As one of the most classic American brands, Ralph Lauren has been the official outfitter of the US Open for 19 years, making the couple’s choice in designer a perfect shoo-in for the event. Van Patten sported a black midi skirt, accented by a chunky silver belt and a red patterned bandana, while White elevated his denim-on-denim ensemble with a black blazer.
5. Phoebe Dynevor
The Bridgerton actress embraced a laid-back style for the US Open in Valentino, pairing a pin-striped vest with a denim midi skirt. Though the two pieces wouldn’t typically be paired together, the actress managed to pull it off in lieu of a more traditional look. The sophistication of the vest and ballet flats strikes a marked contrast with the more casual denim. Dynevor’s inherent elegance and poise truly brought her look together and showcased the prominent impact of character on fashion; it’s possible that’s what made her incongruous look work so well.
